My pump sometimes stalls and blinks red and green. How can I fix this problem?

  • In some of the earlier versions of the MP40, the electronics detected false stalls. If you have an early version of the MP40, please contact our service department who will help to get this problem fixed. The electronics and software running on the MP40w and MP40wES have eliminated this false stall problem.

If you actually do get a stall error on any of the VorTech Propeller pumps, the first thing you want to do is unplug the power supply, either from the driver or the electrical outlet, and carefully remove the wetside from the tank. Check to see if the propeller spins at all with your fingers. If it doesn't, disassemble the wetside and check for any obstructions or problems associated with each of the parts. If everything checks out with the wetside, try running the dryside, BY ITSELF, to see if it runs as it should. If you run into the dryside getting the stall error, or if you find any issues with the wetside, contact EcoTech's service department and you will be assisted.

I opened up my wetside of the mp40w and found a shaved semi circle. I cleaned it out and the next day it was stalled again with more shavings inside. Which part do I need to reorder to replace it? The propeller drive shaft seems to have some play; it has a bit of a gap now in the plastic disc that holds the magnet, on the wet side.

  • The wetside portion of ALL Vortech Propeller Pumps is a complex piece of equipment designed to run 24/7 in a marine environment.
Proper maintainance will drastically increase the lifespan of a weside assembly.
Our tanks can rapidly introduce a buildup of algae (green or coraline), calcium deposits & other foreign material into the wetside. This is unavoidable and perfectly normal.
The dryside motors for all three series pumps have more than enough torque to continue operating when a small amount of this debris begins to accumulate. In time, the particulates start wear down the pieces that allow the pump to function correctly.
A great way to help protect against the above issue & prolong the life of your pumps is to set up a wetside maintainance schedule.
We recommend completely disassembling a wetside assembly for an overnight soak in a 50/50 vinegar and water solution roughly every 4-6 weeks. Once the soak is finished thouroughly clean any remaining residue from all the parts. Rinse off the parts & reassemble.
The prop should spin freely now with little to no noise.
Please let us know how implementing a regular cleaning schedule works for you!

    sad I’m frustrated
I just purchased a new MP40wES yesterday. When I went to install it, it stalled, I immediately returned it. My LFS verified it was stalling and replaced it with a new one. I installed this second one and after running for a few minutes, it stalled too. Obviously it's new so there is nothing blocking the propeller. I’ve tried multiple power cycles with and without the propeller and get the stall indication(alternating green/red). Can you help me out?

    Hello Ecotech Marine,

I've recently taken ownership of two MP40w, ordered from Bulkreefsupply.com on 3/07/2012 delivered 3/14/2012. I’m having a frustrating time with one, SN# 03336420161175. After initial setup, following closing all instructions, the unit flashes the Red/Green LED, under your troubleshooting section on page 40 of the full manual, it states it’s a “Stall Error”. The associated resolution failed as the unit continues to have the same issue.

Additionally; I followed all video’s off your website pertaining to soft, hard, and full resets with both units and still the same issue on only SN# 03336420161175.

    Please advise?
