Hey Mikey, do you have any cool projects you'd be willing to email me? I just bought my Radion and I'm playing around...
-
-
Haven't done much yet. Radions for a new tank which hasn't been set up yet.
-
-
-
-
mine are pretty rubbish! trying out a 7k main light program to see if theres any better sps growth
-
-
Ya that's tough. I was told to be careful of an algae breakout at 7k

That's a great idea. Also, since there are no shared programs yet, perhaps it would be nice if there is a guideline or brief description for each of the Kelvin ratings/presets so that beginners would be guided as to what settigns to choose to avoid burning their corals.
Also, it would be nice if there would be a program for acclimating corals to radion's intensity. Probably, there could also be one program for each week (i.e. Week1 at 70% intensity, Week2 at 80%, and so on). -
-
-
-
Well, I first need to know more about the different Kelvin ratings. Can you fill me in with the details?
1. What is the significance of each Kelvin rating (i mean if 20k is best, why not stay at it for the whole duration of the day)?
2. Have you had any experience with corals dying from too much light? Is light acclimation a must or a precaution?
3. In terms of acclimating corals to light, which is more detrimental to them, the kelvin ratings or the brightness? (i.e. 20K is okay as long as brightness is at 60-70% for the first week?) -
-
Ya, I'm no expert and I need the help as well. We need to find somebody who knows their stuff. Thoughts. I'm going to post a request on canreef.ca (I live in Canada)

I found this great site about everything you need to know for lighting.
http://www.americanaquariumproducts.c...
From what i understand, the Kelvin Rating is the temperature of the light. It seems that 6500K to 12000K is the optimum rating for corals but with deeper tanks, these ratings have a hard time penetrating the deep ends of the tank. Thus, that is where the 20000K rating comes in play.
Also, I believe that the corals do not need to be acclimated to the kelvin ratings, Instead, they need to be acclimated to the intensity/brightness of the lights.
For now, i'll just try the natural mode since the graph seems to be forgiving in terms of the brightness. From there, i'll see if there are changes from the corals that i should be concerned about. Give me a couple of weeks 'til i understand more about the lights. :) -

Natural mode is not available yet. I was told it will be out in December. And my input on the Kelvin is this: I wouldn't go under 6500K. It would be nice to program your transition from night to day and day to night with a 1800K setting which is the Kelvin rating of sunrise and sunset but those settings would promote algae growth in your tank. At least I think so. This would be like running a real old PC, t5, or halide bulb or just a cheap florescent. I may be wrong on that logic but I don't want to find out.
-
-
I have a program I could email. It's just what I'm running until natural mode comes it, but it may at least give some ideas.
As far as the color ratings go, you're thinking about this all wrong. When people say that lower k ratings may grow more algae, they are meaning with conventional lighting. If you were to look at two 250 war halide bulbs, a 6500k bulb would put down more of that wattage in the algae growing spectrum. A 20k bulb would be putting down that power in more blue color which wouldn't grow as much algae. The way the Radion works is completely different. At 12k all diodes are at 100%. To get to 6500k the blues are simply dialed back leaving the wires to over power and give that yellow day light look. The thing you have to realize is that at 12k the whites were still doing Tue same and that 6500k was really hidden under the blue diodes. This also means that coral will not grow faster under lower k ratings because max par output is with all diodes at 100%. YoRadions do an amazing job of mimicking halides, but you really have to throw all the old wisdom out when programming them, because they are very different. -

Now that's beginning to make sense!!
Could you email me at tim.grover@gmail.com
Thanks soo much.

They are really pretty easy to program. It just requires some different thinking from what we are used to with our reef lighting.
I had also hoped that there would be some kind of program sharing network, so I think your idea for EcoTech to host it is awesome.
For now though, we can easily do it on some of the awesome hobby forums if we can get them to allow the file type as an upload. I emailed the owner of my favorite forum, and I'll post a thread link here if we can get it going. -

I am currently running my own Radion XR30w on a 34G Solana and have a custom-program that ramps up and down throughout the day at various intensities maxing out at about 75%. If anyone would like me to share my light profile, just send me a request by e-mailing Service@EcoTechMarine.com and I'll be sure to send it. :)

Algae bloom after installing Radions.
I have 3 tanks (2 180 and a little 30 frag) running 7 Radion lights in total all hanging at 8". The one Tenecor acrylic is 30" tall and the other 180 is 26" tall and they both have a serious algae bloom happening.
I have been running in natural mode now and also testing with artificial mode trying to find a good balance of intensity and output but cant seem to find the right program.
I am currently starting my day at 7am (20k) at 10% ramping up to 14k at 100% by 12pm through till 3pm. Ramping down to 20k 20% at 5pm and finally lights out at 7:30pm.
Parameters all seem normal.
Anyone have any ideas or programs that may help? I went to the 3reef forum but did not find any programs that seemed to fit my dilemma.
Thanks to all in advance. -

All

Above link is my program for sharing.
After a few months of tinkering with all sorts of color combinations, this is what I've come up with.
Note, I have 120 DT (250g system) mixed reef with two Radians mounted flush inside the canopy. I have two spotlights that come on from 12pm - 9pm so the blue fade in the evening looks really sharp with the contrasting spotlights (1 Par 38 12k, 1 Home Depot LED 5k).
Note, the attached program is now actually time shifted behind due to daylight savings time. (e.g., for any programming changings I would now manually alter the program clock back 1 hour). My program’s day starts at 9am (10am DST) and ends at 9pm (10pm DST).
What I like most about this program is the cool blue/red early morning colours, followed by a long gradual brightening with a hint of the green I think Ecotech orignally meant to have, but this version is much more appealing (enjoy having cup of coffee late Saturday morning in recliner watching the fish and lighting come up).
The main part of the day is full sprecturm, then fades into blue/red into late evening - really popping the multi colors in the tank especially the reds. Then fades into blue after midnight and then some red into the 2am hour before going dark.
Makes me happy.
Take a look or try it on and let me know what you think. If you've come up with anything interesting, likewise share.
Regards
Richard

Hey Richard,
I'l try it as soon i can give my corals the 100% at this time i give them 75% so for 5 weeks im in to 100.

Thanks Johnathan!
Frank, you can always dial back the intensity and save the modified program under a new name.
Good luck! -
-
Richard thats a idea i try that with the program jon created i have disaded that i do the natural thing up to 100 en than i go to the custom program.
Il let you now when its running!!! -
-
What brightness in natural mode would be good, i have a 150 gallon tank and 3 radian light over it, hanging at 8''
-
-
I run sinds yesterday the program from Richard looks very well,
But when i whent to bed yesterday at midnight there are stil running some bleu lights.
This morning they are stil running....
I set the start day at 10.00 en de start nightmode at 22.30
How can i solve this problem? -
-
Hi Frank - just dial down the intensity at that hour. I personally like a little blue/red light on late in the evening and early morning so we can see the creatures. But each his own. You can dial down to 0% at each set point if you want it completely dark.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi Richard,
When i take a better look at your program i see that your leave the lights a little bit on.
I change it today i let you now if this works fod me!!

Hi Frank
Great idea to adjust the times to meet your lifestyle.
I have upgraded the program at the link below to have end and beginning of day with more of a pure blue moonlight effect. This then fades into the week hours to a sublte red before darkness, same on early morning startup.
Easy to modify this template for times or effects of your liking.

Will do Frank!
Have also posted template program at Reef Central:

Hey Richard,
Ill be running your program for a few days now with a little changes :)
A little less bleu in the evening ,total darkness at night, only in the evening a chance of 10% clouds and thunder.
For the rest it works just fine for me!!!!!!!!!
Greetings Frank -
-
Hey Frank - wondering how the lighting is working out for you?
Any tweaks you especially like that you implemented?
Regards
Richard -

Hey Richard,
Its still running well!
A little les bleu in the evening and only at noon a change of 10 % of thunder
Also at night total darkness from 1.00 untill 7.00.
For the rest i think its oke for me!! -
